EGR VALVE
Although certain laws require the use of an EGR system, I was wondering if it would help the performance of a '74 390 to remove the EGR valve etc. ? Did that make sense? Anyway, if anyone can give some advice on this matter please do!

removing the egr system won't give you any more performance, but on a 25 year old engine it won't hurt anything to remove it either. what an egr valve does is: introduces a metered amount of exhaust back into the combustion chamber. this lowers the combustion chamber tempature, which increases fuel mileage slightly and decreases the production of oxides of nitrogen (smog). On a newer, computer-controlled vehicle removal of the egr would decrease performance greatly. I'm not using an EGR on my '76 390 and have no problems. if it's the original EGR valve thats on your truck, it probably doesn't work anyway due to the carbon deposits that build up in the intake manifold exhaust passage. I'd take it off.
