prime a new engine?
What is the correct way to prime a freshly built engine? I have a 78 with a 400.
I pull the distributer, use a 5/16 socket in the oil pump shaft, and turn clockwise? Should I keep it turning a certain speed?

what I've heard is counter clockwise in a drill for a couple of minutes, then turn the engine 1/4 turn, prime again for a minute or two, then turn 1/4 turn again and prime until you've made it one full turn, at that point everything should be primed adequately

Just before bolting on the oil pump, you should stick it in a pan of oil and give the shaft a spin; it only takes a turn or two to see the oil push out of the pump. Before putting on the oil filter, fill it at least half full of oil and then spin it on.

Spin it counterclockwise! You will feel the the drill bog down. I prime till I see the oil coming out of the rockers. Careful that you don't burn out your drill motor. It takes a lot of power to pump 40 lbs. of oil pressure.
