When I was changing out the slave cylinder in my truck a couple weeks ago I noticed the rear end was leaking a bit. Nothing ever hits the ground but the bottom of the diff is covered in sludge and it is coming from pinion, not the cover. Is the pinion seal the only thing that can leak from that area or can it be something else?
Assuming it is in deed the pinion seal that is leaking, how much can expect to spend to have it replaced? Ive read on here that everything must be taken out in order to complete the job so it seems this is one job that I cannot do myself, or rather would not like try and run the risk of messing something up. Would it be better/cheaper to let a driveline shop do the work or the stealership?
Have you checked to see if the vent tube is clogged?
When the temperature rises inside the diff, it will cause pressure to build, if the vent tube is blocked, then the pressure can force oil out of the seals. If you find it clogged, you may want to pull your drums too so you can be sure that it did not force any fluid into your brakes.
Good Luck
I had a shop quote me $75 to replace a pinion seal. It's not that hard really. Just need to remove the dive shaft, and pinion yoke. The most important part is using a new crush sleeve and torquing to spec. It is a turning torque though not like torquing a regular bolt. I can't remember the spec. I stopped changing mine, they always tend to leak.
