Help with starting

I have a 2001 7.3 F-250 Diesel truck. i think my glow plugs might be going out but im not sure. when i start it in 40 degrees or so and below it lugs for a minute unless i hold my foot down on the gas. even after i wait till the glowplug light go's out twice then i start it. but it starts fine when i plug it in all night. any help would be greatly appreciated.

First thing to do is check condition of batteries. Including connections to ground. One good battery can crank the engine while not getting enough juce to the glow plugs. A Curtis

Batteries are a good place to start. It's a free check - just takes your time. Next, I would check and test your GPR (glow plug relay) to make sure it's still OK.

Read this for testing: http://www.guzzle7pt3.com/s_gpr.php

You can swap out a bad OEM relay for the Stancor model in that link or get a replacement OEM but either way, check it.

TAKE A TEST LIGHT AND CHECK TO SEE IF THE GLOW PLUG RELAY IS WORKING.THIS IS THE EASYEST TEST TO DO FIRST.I HAVE SEEN SOME THAT BY THE APPERANCE THEY LOOK ALMOST NEW BUT WHEN YOU TEST THEM THEY DONT WORK.

Keep in mind that the WTS light is only on for about 12-15 seconds. The glowplugs are really on for about 90 seconds or more when cold. Leave the key in the on position for at least a minute when it gets that cold and I bet it fires up a lot better. That is why a lot of us hook up an LED so we can monitor the actual time that the glow plugs are engaged.

Also with a flaky battery, it might be best to wait the whole cycle, the GP pull 120 amps, this combined with starting could be a problem for week batteries.
