see if somebody close to you has a scan tool like an auto enginuity or something along those lines . Maybe they can meet you halfway and perform a scan for you . Would have to be oil or fuel related . Try to tap on the ipr with a screw driver maybe the plunger is stuck . Try to do it when the truck is trying to die .
this morning at -18 my truck died on start up when plugged in which kinda surprised me.
i hit the key and it fired right up without hesitation i shifted into neutral and let the clutch out the engine bogged down some hopped outta the truck to run back inside and let the truck warm up and about the time i got to my front door it stalled started it up and then it ran fine. i think it might be time to replace the trans oil
Did you ever change the oil?? 5k is a lotta miles on that oil with out having it tested or running some remote filters in my opinion, I'm running the same oil and I'm changing every 3k till I get some additional extended filters in her. How often are you changing the fuel filer and hitting the drain lever? I do my filter every other oil change and the water valve once a month. I'm probably not too far from you her in NW Wisc (55 min NE Twin Cities) At 0 degree's I agree on minimum 90 to 100 seconds on the glow plugs before hitting the starter! As for the gear noise your hearing, thats the HPOP, believe it's gear driven and thats what your hearing at these temps (-22 here this morning!!) Nobodys said it yet but GET RID OF THAT K&N!!!! 6637's the way to go! Another item which helps with warming up is an AIC (auxilliary Idle Controller), I got mine off ebay for around $65, really helps with morning warm up as these engines do not warm up at all at idle.
I pulled the K&N and replaced with a stock until I can do the 6637 this spring.
5K on synthetic shouldn't be any problem. I'm not doing much in town, it's almost all highway driving and no towing (other than hauling my car about 50 miles).
Does the whining sound indicate the HPOP is bad? If that's the case, then I need to go back to the shop that did it earlier this year and bitch at them. I called this week and he said this behavior was "normal."
I've never heard one at zero or colder that didn't make that whirring noise, was -22 this morning here and -40 up in Orr Mn not too far away, even 5-40 pours pretty thick (I got a qt under the seat and tried to pour some this morning, poured like honey!!)
That seems strange how it starts and then just shuts off I am about 6hrs north of you and it has been just as cold I am using 10/30 this winter with no troubles one winter I had 15/40 and it would do something what you are describing but not shut off it would go into limp mode with the check engine light on till the oil would thin out a bit guess the oil was too thick for the HPOP.
maybe it is time for an oil change or something is up with the HPO system like a sensor.
Last year I used 0/40 and let the truck sit for a week not plugged in at these temps she fired but didn,t like it and never died or set a CEL
I bought the truck in Oct. '08. I ran all last winter and do not remember the HPOP whining like this. It could have and I just don't remember. I do remember that I had absolutely no problems firing it up though (other than bad batts and bad GPs) using the same Rotella synth 5/40 that I'm running now.
I did notice last night that I was about 2 qt. low. I filled it up so we'll see what tomorrow morning brings.
The HPOP feeds the injectors. I know there is something where the truck will kill/not start if the HPOP reservoir is not full.
Next oil change I might try 0/40 and see what I get.
I don,t know If you can still get 0/40 Esso used to make it up here but I don,t think they do anymore everywhere I seem to see 5/40 or 0/30 and not 0/40.
I think the whine is normal like Yoslick said they all do it mine does too.
