I find it funny that people think they're all better drivers than everyone else.....and couldn't possibly become a better driver by having some technology there to help. What exactly makes them such perfect drivers???
Maybe 30 years of driving in real world conditions. Not relying on electronics?
I still drive My old carbed Mazda thru the winters up here. RWD and no weight in the bed.
I can easily see TC and Stability control as being the next standard feature across the board thus making our vehicles even more expensive and taking more driver control away from us.
I'm not necessarily against computer assisted driving but it would be a little different as I currently have none of those features and I'm getting around just fine.
I'm hoping to post up a report after the 'predicted' snow storm to hit Baltimore arrives tonight! Estimates go as high as over 24" to lows around 13". I cannot wait. It is gets too deep I will not be able to resist the urge to take my Jeep out instead though! Too much fun in the Jeep in deep snow to go out in anything else.
Just got 24" of snow yesterday. 09 F150 will not move. The main problem is the Pirelli tires. I had to go get my neighbor last nite at 10:00 and the snow was over the front bumper - truck wouldn't move. I cranked up my '88 Bronco with a set of Michelin all terrains, and we were home in a half hour. I am sad I can't get out in the new truck, but I can say before the major accumulation of snow, the TC/advancetrac was a welcome feature.
It's the most advanced technology on our vehicles.

4x4, e=locker locked, disabled advance trac, then enabled advancetrac. The tires just caked up and it stood still. My Bronco has better tires for the snow.
Tires are the single most important thing for safe winter driving. 4X4, ESC, TC, driver experience, etc. Mean nothing if the tires are not up to snuff.
I take My wifes Outback w/ Blizzaks out on lakes to go ice fishing. Was pushing 14" of wet snow with the bumper last winter. The thing wouldn't get stuck!
I can GUARANTEE that an unlifted F150 will not go through 2'+ of snow. Neither will an 08. BTDT. My 02 would, but the frame was an inch higher than an 08. Just an inch... As a consolation, not many vehicles will go through 24" of snow either. Once one or two do, then my Fusion can follow in their tracks usually.
Whalebird, I had Pirelli Scorpion STR's on my 05 SD and I can honestly say they were some of the worst tires I've ever had on snow. And they wore great. I had 47,000 miles on 'em when I sold the truck and they still had bunches of wear left. The General Americraps on my F150 aren't a lot better, either. But they also are wearing good. I'll be looking to replace them in the spring.
Do they not offer the LSD option anymore? I haven't done a 'build my truck' lately...but I ordered the 3.73 LSD in my 08' 2WD truck and haven't had any problems...
As for the 24" of snow comment I saw above, I keep about 250LBS of salt in the bed over the rear axle and last year I was at a clients site way out in the country and Purolator wouldn't get my order to me due to bad roads they pulled in the drivers. I found a single store (Futureshop in Hamilton...competitors bah) that was open and had the cables I needed...I drove my truck through snow drifts over my hood till I got to the 'highway' (rural highway) and then the snow was only about 12-18" but once I got in the city there was 4x4's stuck...keeping movement and going forward I managed to get in, get my cables and get back to the client site...
Anyway; just saying that if you don't like TC...why order it? Just get LSD instead!
You don't order TC as an option, it is standard on all '09+ F150's and pretty much all other late model cars & trucks (mandated by gov't.). The options for rear axle is e-locker (FX4's), limited slip and open differentials.
