4x4 help

Hi,
I have a 2001 f250 sd that is stuck in 4x4 high, I rotate the selector
on the dash to 2 weel drive but the 4x4 light in the dash stays on and the transfer case stays engaged. I replaced the front hubs w/maual hubs a while ago so at least i can unlock them. Any ideas ??

Thanks

In order of likelyhood -

1. Shift relays under the hood.
2. Shift motor on the side of the x'fer case
3. Dash selector switch

someone correct me if im wrong but the way i diagnosed my 01 f250SD is by first unpluging the 2pin connector only on the transfer case motor and put my voltmeter on it to see if you get power when you switch the switch from 4hi to 2hi. If you do then its probably the motor. If not, its either the relay of the switch.

If you get 12v to the 2-pin connecter, If you reconnect the transfer case motor and remove the 3 bolts that hold it on, get someone to flip the switch and see if the if the motor tries to turn.

Just my 2cents

I should have included checking fuses in my list. That's always the first simple thing to check.

okay here is where I am
Checked all fuses (fuses good)
swaped both relays w/ blower motor relay and blower worked w/ both relays this tells me they are good
checked to make sure there is power at relay block and there is power
took transfer case motor off and cycled it back and forth by hooking it up to 12 volts
It still did not work, about to give up for the night had the truck running all of a sudden i heard a relay click and it worked, cycled it several times from
2hi to 4hi to 4lo and back and it worked fine so i turned it off , stated it back up backed out of the garage went to shift it into 4hi and nothing.
I messed around with it then got it to go into 4hi but cold not get it out again talk about frustrating!!
Is there a way to test the dash switch w/ a voltmeter ?
Could it be a broken wire somewhere?
Do I need to plug the vacuume lines after putting maual hubs will that affect the transfer case shifting?
Very frustrating!!!!

Frustrating yes, but you've actually made a lot of progress. You've eliminated some possible problems, and narrowed it down to a bad electrical connection, or so it would seem.[/quote]

Might need a schematic to see how it's supposed to work. First step would probably be to see if you've got a hot line coming into it, and if not you have to look further upstream.

Definitely. Otherwise you would have a vacuum leak and that will cause HVAC problems. But it would not affect the x'fer case because that is an electric motor.

Fixed !!!!
I found a wire that was corroded off one of the clips on the block that the
(2) 4x4 relays plug into, was able to get it apart and get the connector out.
I was also able to open the crimp and reuse the connector as it is made to
lock into the plastic relay block when pushed in from behind.I then filled all
the connector holes from the back side w/silocone to keep the moisture out. Put it all back together and it works fine. Would not want to see the bill from a garage trying to track that one down.

Thanks for the help !!!!!!
