Class IV Hitch?

I posted this message in the "towing" section but thought I'd also post here in case any other Expy owners happen to know...

A friend of mine recently purchased a 2002 Expy w/ the tow package and opted for the Class IV hitch, trading in his '98 Expy w/ a Class III hitch. We have searched and searched and have been unable to find the weight ratings for the factory Class IV hitch. The dealer was also of no help on this. We are mainly needing the tongue weight capacity of the Class IV as his boat has a tongue weight of 630lbs. The information we found in the manual states that, with his particular axle ratio, he can tow up to 6900lbs. This is with the 17in tires so he's even considering switching to 16in to help increase the numbers.

Basically, we're trying to find out if he pull a 7100lb boat without the need for a weight distributing hitch.

Any help would be appreciated.

Any help would be appreciated. Hello:#1= Your Expy will pull that weight OK! I would not worry about changing wheels/tires. #2= I would really recomend/demand a weight distributing hitch, without one on my 2000 5.4 Expy it would turn into a real animal to tow.(I tow a 24 foot enclosed trailer/Mustang Show car, 7400 lbs.total, even over the mountains with no problems. I have a 97 5.4 EB and I tow a 7200 boat. It does fine now but I had to put Rancho RS9000 (so I could make them stiff to tow but soft when I am not) and a heavy anti-sway bar. Load distribution hitch is out for me because I have surge brakes on my trailer as do most boat trailers.
