I had this question in the trans section of the forum but I never get much info from that section. So I will post it here since the trans is in a 73-79 Ford.
The c4 in my 73 f100 has been throwing me a fit for a while now, its just very annoying how sluggish and fast the shifts are.
I put in a new modulator valve and replaced vacuum lines. I adjusted the modulator as much as possible but it didnt bring the shift points up any at all. Shifts to 3rd at about 10-15mph.
I have heard that this may mean there is a problem with the transmission governor. Which is on the back of the trans in the tailshaft. What is it that happens to make the governor not work properly?
Im not a shade tree mechanic but I'm not a expert on auto transmissions either. Is this something I can tackle and fix myself? I am gonna buy some sort of book on Ford Automatic Transmissions. Thanks for any help.
Anybody have a diagram of the transmission governor valve? I bought the Haynes Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul book but it doesn't show the governor valve apart.
The governor has to be the problem since replacing the modulator and adjusting it didn't change the shift points at all.
I've been shifting it manually so I can hold out the shifts to a good rpm before changing. It does ok that way.
It is a pretty simple piece. Chances are that a piece of rubber or gasket material has got in the little piston in there, best bet is to pull the tail and check it out. I think after you get the tail off it is just 2 3/8 bolts holding it on, after you get it off, you can clean it up real good with carb cleaner and then lube with tranny fluid and see if that helps, it can't hurt.
By the way, you don't have to buy a tail gasket if yours gets trashed, as long as you get it clean, silicon works fine.
Thanks for the info. The trans fluid looks to be in great shape put I plan on going ahead and putting in a new filter. Also going to adjust the bands, then take a look at the governor and see where all that gets me.
Best wishes to you. I wish i could remember more. I built a C4 about 8 years ago and had a Guru name Helmut help on another forum. The whole build was pretty easy but I messed up and broke the oil pump gear and had to pull it all back out to see what happened.
