I have a 99 7.3 and have been trying to figure out how to quieten it down. A guy told me he bought one new and had the problem. Took it back to Ford and they put a torque converter in it and it helped 100%. Any suggestions??? I love my truck just wish it was quieter. Thanks
Well, first off, Welcome to FTE! What exactly do you mean loud? Engine? Exhaust? Your friend had a new torque converter installed, what was wrong with the old one?
I don't really know what was wrong with it. He said they just replaced it and it quitened down. It seems like more engine noise than anything. It sounds like the valves need adjusting or something.
I have heard of the "can of marbles" sound coming from the torque converter. I have not personally witnessed this before, but I have heard of it. If, and I say if, that is what you hear, then you will likely need a torque converter.
yes the 99's TC makes more noise then the newer trucks..mine went 200k before it gave up..you can run it how it is and hope for the best..or replace it now and hope the trans holds up..if it blows..then thats another TC for the rebuild....
What part of the vehicle is loud? Is there a rattling noise under the center hump? If so, that is the torque converter. Early 1999 trucks had a loud Torque Converter. Is the loud noise a whistling noise? If so, that is the turbo (early 99's had a louder turbo than the newer vehicles). Is the engine itself real loud and snappy (while idling, etc)? If so, it is a diesel, so it is going to be louder. What engine oil are you running? If you are running 5-30 then it is going to be a noticeable bit louder than if you are running 15w-40. Also, if you have quite a few miles on this truck, the Injectors and rocker bolts could use re-torquing. It has been mentioned on here before. I don't have the torque specs on these, so hopefully someone else will chime in.
I'm using 15-40 delo. change it every 5m. I've taken it to a few ford dealers but they don't seem to want to fool with it. I think I need to pinpoint the sound. it make a clacking sound but a diesel is hard to pinpoint.
Like they said lots of things can make noise on a diesel. One thing could be fuel, make sure the filter is clean and no air is getting in. My 02 was not really loud but I did notice when I use a fuel additive with a cetane booster it really gets quiet, so you might try that. I have used the stuff from Ford, and I also used Standyne Performance formula, both made it real quiet. 20% biodiesel from Safeway also makes mine real quiet.
*tongue in cheek* Buy a louder radio! Seriously though, the diesel fuel additives will help. I use Gen49D made by Maryn Group, and it seems to help a lot. It's fairly pricey, but you only need a couple of ounces per tank. Use it every time. In the summer, I use Bio-diesel. If you live where it doesn't get that cold, the B20 mix works fabulous. If the temps never get above freezing where you are, don't go any more than 5 to 10% bio or you'll get gelling issues.
More than likely it's just your torque converter. Nothing it wrong with it, the '99s they put a double disc in. The later models they put a single disc...to quiet them down.
An easy way to figure out if it's your TC is do the lock-up mod. You can wire a switch to manually lockup your TC. I did that to mine, and it made the truck go about silent.
I changed the TC in my 99 before it came apart and it did quiten down THAT noise and it was a "marble in can" sound that I had gotten used to and didn't know how bad it was until it was gone. As far as the rest of the 7.3 noises, get a louder exhaust, sound deadening for the cab and as already suggested, a better stereo system.
