don't usually hang out here , i'm on the 48-60 forum mostly , but ......... i got a buddy just bought a 66 thunderbird convertible minus the driveline , and he's seriously considering swapping a v-10 into it . he's got a line on a wrecked van i believe with the entire driveline etc in it . i assume that it shoukld fit seeing as they hold an fe and you can dain near stand in it to work on it , but if any of you can give me some dimensions it'd help with it before he buy's .
i'll give you some estimates. the motor is 33" wide from exhaust manifold to exhaust manifold and from the bell housing to the fan about 36". my trans is 4wd, in assume you want measurments on a 2wd. good luck.
If you can find dimensions on a 5.4, use that, and then add the space between two fuel injectors or spark plugs.
If you don't use a mechanical fan, it MIGHT fit. The FE isn't that long, looking at a V10, it's VERY long because of (of course) the extra cylinder, but also the big timing cover for the OHC.
I remember working on an FE in a '65 t-bird, and from memory, you might just have to move the radiator forward
DEFINITELY report back and let us know what you find. I'm very interested in any and all V10 transplant stories ...
The FE Ford is actually a fairly compact engine. They came in Mustangs, yet a 429/460 will not fit in that same Mustang. I would LOVE to see this T-bird/V10 swap come about, and think it would be fairly easy if you just swapped the front suspension out for a Mustang II setup. This really opens up the engine bay width-wise, as far as length, you're on your own.
thanks guys . i'm trying to convince him to go the tried and true fe route , but ..... i got two 360 fe's sitting along witha 4v intake off a 65 bird , and despite just needing to swap in a 390 crank kit and walla ... he want's to be really " different . oh well he's a porsche guy so who knows .................. thanks again .
That also brings something else to mind. Some people have found that putting a 4.6L into any older vehicle is much easier if you use a Crown Victoria chassis underneath. Even an old pickup
