just the opposite actually, if you have power at the plug it may be the motor, but just because you show power with a test light doesnt really mean you have enough power, once you see that you indeed have some power at the plug , you should check it with a volt meter to ensure you have, 12 volts at the plug. if you show less than 12 volts it may not be enough to engage the motor that moves the internal gears of the transfer case, the test light is just an easy way to determine if you have any power at all flowing to the plug. no light at the plug would indicate a wiring or switch or relay problem, and you can start to back track. Corroded connections generally are the colprit for a drop in voltage. Without the indicator lighting up on the dash its a good chance you are not getting any power to the system. I learned the hard way that going back to basics, can save you a lot of money, replacing parts unneccesarily.

Reason: adding
no power to plug, moved relays around still nothing took cover off of one of my relays pushed contactor in so it would make conection and i could hear shift motor in tc work. I don't thank both relays would go bad at same time so check my switch. reading another forum someone said the switch controls the ground to the relay?? but when i took the switch apart there is a resistor for each position of the switch this tells me that i should have 12v to the switch but i don't. short of pulling my fusesbox out does any one know if i should 12v at the switch and i only see 2 fuses for my 4x4 #111 30amp should go to relays #19 10amp to switch??? just a guess.
thanks
dave

I had this problem F250 2001 Powerstroke, 75K Miles
I had this same problem of no 4x4 light, 4x4 not working, then like twice it worked but only when trying to troubleshoot. I finally took to ford and got bent over and they found the wire coming out of the relay under the hood, aka harness to motor, was bad. I have owned this truck since new, no floods, always on the road. Strange. It fixed it and a new motor also. Now my latest thing is my tail lights stopped working. Everything, again everything else light wise works fine except tail lights. I only have 8vdc to back of truck. I kinda figure it is bad wires again from under the hood dist. power box. I'll wait til spring to permantly fix.
