I'm sure I'm beating a dead horse here, but I have a few questions about doing this conversion. First, I have a 95' F150 5.8 4X4 E40D. I have read that you need a mustang computer, 302HO, 89'-93' ? and the fuel injection harness. Does that mustang computer work for a 4X4 and the automatic transmision? Or is it better to just go to a junk yard and get a computer off a newer F150 5.8 with a MAF sensor? Is the mustang computer with it's EEC used more for HP applications and the truck one just used for someone looking to just add the MAF?
From what I've read, I need the EEC, the wire harness, the MAF itself, install another O2 sensor for a total of two on the truck; one for each bank. Do you also change the throttle body to the mustang one and adapt the snorkle? If so, just use the mustang upper and lower intake?
Lots of information, but no hard parts list so to speak. I'm looking for increased economy, but I've got a spare 5.8 that may just get some goodies!
Sorry for the novel, I just want to start gathering parts for this conversion and want to get it right.
The E4OD was never installed in a mustang and since that trans is computer controlled you are limited to the truck computer. If you find a donor truck from the same year as yours then it is possible the wiring harnesses will interchange but I'm not 100% sure on that. There is no need to change the intake for this and the mustang version would not fit your motor anyway, the 5.8 block is wider and the upper/lower parts cannot be mixed.
If you are looking for mileage start with the basics. Tuneup with good quality parts. Replace the factory manifolds with shorties, use a Bassani y-pipe with a high flow converter. Finish it off with a 3" pipe, muffler of your choice and a 3" tailpipe.
Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Don't carry more weight than necessary. It's a truck, drive it like one. Converting to MAF on a stock truck is probably not going to gain you much other than a lighter wallet.
If you want some more power then consider better heads, cam, intake, exhaust and then a MAF conversion.
