hi all great site, am looking 4 info. v 8 swap, 97 ranger, 5 sp auto.
what yr explorer is the best donor< did they come with manual trans option ? would a expedition serve as well, thanks, Frank
Any year 5.0 Explorer is good as long as it doesn't have PATS. I'm not sure if there is a way to work around the PATS or not? If the Explorer has "P" heads you will need big $$$ headers.
The manual trans would have to come from an older Mustang, T5. The Explorer computer would look for signal from the auto trans, which would be missing of course, so you would have to have the Explorer computer custom tuned and leave the "auto trans" out of the tune.
Do you have emissions or inspections? If you do, you may have to stick with the OBD2 of your '97.
My Ranger is a '97, but I swapped in a 5.0 HO from a '92 Thunderbird which is OBD1.
PATS = Passive Anti Theft System. A special key is needed to start the vehicle. I don't know much about the PATS system... it's possible that it won't cause you any problems at all swapping it in. My '97 Explorer has no PATS, but it does have the "P" heads which will require the more expensive headers.
Dont mean to hijack the thread, but is it possible to swap in a 2v mod motor into the Rangers? I would love to have 4v Ranger but that requires waaaay too much customization to make it work...the 2 valves arent nearly as wide but I am not sure of heighth...anyone know if it has been done by more than 1 person? I searched the 4v swap and found only 1 person who had done it themselves besides for who put the '03 Cobra motor in a Ranger.
considering the explorers came with the 4.6 I don't know any reason in the world you couldn't make it work in the Ranger. in fact it should drop in with factory parts IIRC.
thanks 4 the advice people, wiil try to put touse after the snow has gone
i think that 1 of those overhead cam motors will interfere with the master cyl brake - booster assembly on my 97 nranger

That would be sweet...nice little bolt on 2v/T45 or 3650 combination w/ 3.90 8.8" rear. Good call on the Explorer coming with them, I didnt even think of the obvious like that.
I did some searching a few months ago about the DOHC swap and basically there was only 1 person I found that had completed the swap and he used a Mark VIII motor and T45 transmission IIRC. Apparently he had to do a small body lift in order for the transmission to fit in the tunnel in addition to cutting out the firewall and making numerous other changes. I just always thought it would be awesome to swap in the 4v motor because with some basic bolt ons like a cold air kit w/ high flow filter and exhaust you have a great sounding, reliable 300rwhp ride. To make that power with the common 302 swap you need the whole H/C/I package...plus the mod motors are OBDII which I would need with my '98.
ibfrank-the 1996-97 Explorer 5.0 does not have PATS - 98 and newer do. The stock Explorer exhaust manifolds aren't as free flowing as headers, but you can use MagnaFlow cats and mufflers with them and it's a bolt-in for your truck.
ty all for the advice, a bolt in power increase is what im looking for, i figure i can accomplish that with my skills and tools, and in my 1 car garage. my v6 is gettin tired and i figure the 8will not be any worse on gas and the fun quotient will be way up. plus i love that v 8 rumble.
