Headers for a Six

My friend has a set of bran new headers for his 300 straight six that he was going to use and now he wants to sell them to me for my six. I wanted to know since I have never heard headers on a six, if it will soud loud and have a deep tone to it. I was told that the headers would up my horsepower and create better exhaust flow. I don't know if this is true since I have never had headers before . That's because I'm only sixteen and don't know much about straight sixes. If you can, please help me out. Thanks.

The headers in themselves wont change the sound as much as your exhaust system as a whole. What type of mufflers you use will be the biggest influence on sound. Headers will create better exhaust flow, and will up your horsepower (along with possible fuel mileage gains), but dont expect huge gains from headers alone. If combined with a small 4 bbl carb, and possibly an RV type cam, you will notice the best performance gains.

The biggest problem with those big sixes is that they can't breath with factory intake and exhausts. The headers will help and with a good set of turbo mufflers the engine will sound good but not be loud, however, if you want it to be loud, use glasspacks. Installing an aluminum intake manifold with a small (390 cfm) 4 barrel carb would increase your horse power a bunch but, if you can't afford that then put an adapter and a Holley 2 barrel carb on the stock intake and it will still run pretty good. I used Clifford Performance parts on my truck but there are other companies out there that make performance parts for the 300 six. Check out jcwhitney.com

With an aluminum intake and 4 barrel carb and dual headers, your six will run as strong as a small V8.

Been there, done that.
