Help My Truck Died

Yesterday I put the FRx on. Drove the truck yesterday and today, things were fine. When I had it apart the fuel pressure regulator parts looked worn, so today I bought a rebuild kit and this afternoon I put it on. I started the truck up to check for leaks and buy the time I got around to the front of the truck it started to pull down and started knocking. By the time I ran back around to shut it off, it was knocking real bad and barely running. I shut it off. Rechecked everything, tried to start it again, it hits but doesn't run. Any idea's?

Fuel bowl still full? If you turn the key on and open the drain valve, do you have good pressure? Any fuel leaks? Almost sounds as if your FPR rebuild is not holding pressure.

All the parts that I put into the FPR look good. I noticed that the new spring was about a 1/16" longer than the old one but figured that was normal for the age. It seems to be low on pressure, the pump runs for about 15-20 seconds before stopping when you turn the key on. Is it possible that the new kit, spring and FRx raised the pressure enough to kill my fuel pump that quick?

You have got to find out if you have fuel. Check for fuel flow the get back. Chris' method work fine.

I'll have to check it out tomorrow. I left it at work. I'll go back in the morning with a fuel pressure guage and check the pressure. I also have a new OEM pump that I'll take with me just in case. Thanks for the response. I'll let you know what I find out. I hope it's the pump. I'm just supprised it died so quick.

Don't overlook the obvious, like a plug off the IPR or harness pulled loose. You have been doing some work under there and it's easy to knock one loose.

I'm guessing it's not your pump. They only stay on for around 25 seconds when the key is turned on if the truck is not started.

When it first happened I thought it might be a plug knocked loose and checked all of them in the area. I also took the FPR apart again and checked it out. I replace the new spring with old one thinking maybe a thing with too much pressure. Even replaced the CPS just in case but still no luck. I'm just hoping its still the pump. I don't want to think of what else it could be.$$$$

Something similiar happened to me. During my HPOP fix I decided to shim the FPR, ran fine for the test drive, let it sit overnight and the next morning it ran for about 2 minutes and died in the same manner as yours.

Replaced the pump and everything returned to normal. Originally didn't think it was the pump because I could hear it buzz but upon closer inspection found that it wasn't pumping fuel.

Well that was my problem too. I think rebuilding the FPR was too much for my pump with 200,000 plus miles. Put the new one on, works like a charm. The only problem I had was getting the inlet side of the pump un-hooked. I ended up busting it. I used a piece of 5/16 fuel line and some hose clamps to put it back together but I'm worried that the suction may collapse it. Has anyone replaced the hard plastic inlet tube with rubber fuel line and what kind hose did you use and have you had any issues? I also noticed that it starts faster now too. I had thought my HPOP was on its way out but now it's starts in half the cranking time that did.

Many folks here are running some rubber fuel line so that's no worry as long as you've got the right kind of hose. Is it properly rated, or did you just pick up some hose? Seems like 30R7 or 30R9 rated fuel injection hose is what you should be using.

Got it at O'reilly's. It's Gate's, rated for diesel service but not for pressure, only for return. They didn't have anything else and I was in a pinch. I figured being on the suction side it would be ok. It felt stiff enough but still worry about sucking together if it starts getting really cold and pulling hard. I was going to change it out next week if I find something better.

Does shimming the FRP have some weird effect on a marginal pump perhaps?

I'd say there's a chance you may have the right stuff anyway. Did you buy enough hose you can read the numbers printed on it?

No, I just looked. I didn't see any. All I can say is it's a black single braded hose. I think I'll probably go to Hyspeco next week and see what they have.
