truck box

How much does a 8' bed weigh? A friend and I will be going tonight to pick one up that the guy claims is rust free. I'm just wondering how much of a challenge it will be to load it onto a trailer, bring it back to campus, then put it on top of my existing bed?

well i dont think you could get it to fit on top of your existing bed but if you remove the existing bed you can set it on the frame

Well my plan is to set the whole thing upside-down on top of the existing bed. I'll lay a couple 2x4s down, and I have some 2x4s cut down to stick in the stake pockets. Hopefully the two boxes will fit together really nicely, and then I'll take some straps from the wheel-well to wheel-well, along with some clamps on the inside of the bedrails clamping them together.

are you getting it as a replacement bed or as a camper type thing?

replacement bed. I found it while at college, and to drive home, get my dad's trailer, bring it back, wait a week, and head down to get it, I'd add an additional 500 miles of driving. Hopefully this way I can save myself some money in gas.

I was told by a friend of mine who works at a body shop that the best way to transport a bed is upside-down because it it will offer the best support for the boxsides. He told me there's a chance of curling the bedsides in if it sits on a trailer right side up.

well your truck can pull it if you clamp it to the existing setting it bedrail to bedrail and have something in the steakholes holding it from sliding

that's the plan. I'm just wondering how much muscle is going to be involved it lifting it high enough to get it there.

We replaced the bed on my 88 chevy pickup with 3 people. If you have a comealong and a rafter, you could probably do it by yourself difficultly and easily with 2 people.

Well, i got the box, and 4 people were enough to lift it off the trailer and onto the bed of my truck. It was a bit difficult to lift that high, but it worked out well, and transporting it upside down with the stake pockets tied together worked really well. I don't think it moved an inch the whole way home.

That's cool man! A truck bed carrying a truck bed, it works on so many levels.

Here's a quick pic I managed to snag on my cell phone before my dad already had it picked up and off my truck.

What's not evident is the main reason I wanted the new box. While you can see the rust around the wheel wells, you can't see the large dent right behind the rear tire. The boxside is pushed in a good 4-6 inches from a hit and run (happened in the college parking lot at some time during a snowstorm last year). Now I can drive my truck AND work on the box at the same time.
