Seriously need some help...

Okay, I posted a question about the cross member in an '88 F150. Well, the answer I got was to check all the manuals you can find. Well, they give no info on removing it, it just says remove it like it' a simple task or something. Well, it's not. I cannot remove the ears that come off the frame that hold the tranny cross member because the bolts are so rusted and even then I cant fit a wrench or anything up there. So, I need some help and info on getting this sun of a gun back in. I tried doing it the same way I got it out, but to no prevail. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

So how did you take it out? Is there something in the way preventing it from going back in the same way? Pics would really help to see the problem of course... if you have a way to post them.

Well, the way I got it out was I took a crow bar and managed to get it in a position to where I could make those ears get out of the way. Well, It's not working out so well for getting it back in. And I would post pictures but I cant find the memory card to my camera.

those "ears" arent necessary i dont have them on my truck you can put the crossmember in without even using those "ears" i did it on my 92 (multiple times DONT ASK lol) Honestly it isnt hard to put that tranny support crossmember back in jack your tranny up as far as it will go and slide it under the tranny mount and bolt the dang thing to the frame. Then lower the tranny and bolt the tranny mount to the crossmember

See, I thought about removing the ears, but theres really no way to unless I cut them off, and even then theres a space issue.

explain the space issue without the ears even with the ears you should be able the lay the crossmember to the frame by turning it to a 45* angle to the frame and laying it down on the frame after straightening it out then you just slide it under the tranny mount

I had the same problem on my 90 F-150. I got the crossmember off by wedging it out with a prybar.

I promise, you can loosen those rusty bolts with enough PB Blaster, a breaker bar, cheater and a lot of determination. Once the ears are loose, you will have no problem slipping the crossmember underneath.

Schneider, did you loosen your bolt or use a prybar to push it in? because I think I might have came up with a great idea.

Well, my idea didn't work. I tried wedging it back in and about got hit in the face with the cross member.

If by "ear" you are referring to a bracket that goes between the crossmember and the top of the frame, then we are talking about the same thing. If you loosen the bolts of that bracket at the frame by loosening the two nuts that hold it tight against the frame, you can wiggle it up and down, which allows you to slide the crossmember underneath it.

I know its hard to loosen those nuts when they are rusty, since you have a very small amount of room to work a wrench onto the bolts (seeing as the bottom of the truck floor is so close to the frame). But it can be done.
