What is the starting procedure for these mechanical diesels? Is there a manual high idle control, or is it automatic? Are you supposed to depress the accelerator in the cold during a start?
My old Mercedes diesel had a manual high idle control and in the cold, it had to be turned up, glowed a good glow and it would fire up w/o depressing the accelerator.
with the fuel pump working properly and all other fuel components in order you shouldnt have to press the pedal. I am almost positive that they all have fast idle switches and they turn off when the engine reaches about 112F. As i know it, turn key to on, wait for WTS light to go off, turn key and boom. Now that is with all working components. Are you having issues?
on the visor of mine is says above 30* press the pedal half way down and release, wait for the light to go out and hit it, below 30* all the way down and release.

you shouldnt have to full throttle one of these ever. To set the high idle, to press the pedal about 1/2inch. In looking both are the same, 7.3/6.9. It might say full throttle but it isnt necessary. I would say during sub zero F temps maybe.

You do relaize that they are not saying hold the pedal down, while cranking right.
The whole idea behind puting the pedal down under 30 is to give the high idle solenoid a chance to move before the return spring on the throttle cable trys to push it back in..
Mine moves real slow sometimes. (like slow enough that I only get partial high idle on starts. then i can hold the pedal once it starts and it will finally hold higher.
Fishin you are killing me. Your high idle is broke dick, doesn't apply to those who have functioning high idles. Yes I realize what they mean but I barely move my pedal and the high idle will set, not half throttle or full. That's why I asked.
To set the high idle, You HAVE TO push the accelerator pedal down with the key in the ON position prior to cranking to set the high idle solenoid. Once set, you then crank the engine over to start it. The solenoid is not strong enough to push the throttle, only strong enough to hold it out.
huh, and i always thought you were supposed to hold the throttle down about halfway while starting it when its cold out............thats what ive always done........

Me too, thats what the visors instructions say.
We need Dave S. to come clear this up for us.
