Hey guys... I'm still having that elusive thumping sound in my cooling system when I shut my freashly build 400 down. If I run it up to temp, then shut if off, it makes a loud thumping sound in the cooling system, and actually shakes the upper radiator hose. It sounds like its overheating, and boiling inside the engine, but the (Brand new) tempature gauge reads 185. Arrrghhh!! Anyone know if it would make a difference if the heads got switched around? Passenger side on drivers side, and drivers side on passengers side. They came off of a different engine, and I have no way of knowing which is which, but I'm told it doesnt matter, because they are identicle.... It appears they are the same, most importantly, the coolant holes all look to be in the same place. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!
sounds like you might have something blocking one of the passages and and when you shut it off that hot spot is boiling your water. the thumping is probably steam from that hot spot
The heads are interchangable one side to the other. It has been mentioned alot here lately that the head gaskets can easily be put on upside-down, causing one of the coolant passages to the head to be blocked off. Ive never done this to experience the result, though.
as Nathan said, this has been a subject of much disscussion here lately, and if I'm correct, one of my fellow ford fans had exactly the same problem as you are having. As it turned out, it was a head gasket that had been reversed. He said that he noticed a little discoloration on one head due to the increased heat in addition to the thumping in the cooling system upon shutdown. Good luck, Dave
Thanks for the responses here guys. I originally posted this message april 27th... shortly after that I found the problem. You guys were right. It turns out my passenger's side head gasket was reversed! It is rather easy to do. When you install the gaskets they both say front on them, but for the passenger's side to go that way it has to be upside down. Which of course doesnt really look right at first glance. Anyway its all set now, and running perfectly for the past 500 miles. Thanks again for the help!!!
Steve thanks for coming back and putting a ribbon and bow on this issue. Most guys that write here really want to help, and want to know that you were helped.
