Ford made a f250LD prior to the 97 model change, like the 97 f250LD they were badged simply as f250's. If you look at some of the older f250's you will find some with the semi-floating 10.25 rear axle and 7 lug wheels, thus f250LD. the F250LD were made as a stop gap between the f150 and f250, for thus that needed a slightly heavier duty truck than a 150, but not as heavy duty as a 250
