It got real cold real fast here in central IL last night. went from 35 to about 5 this morning from yesterday.
I have a 95 f150 300 5 speed 2wd with 104,000 on it. Truck was very slow to start this morning. It cranked really slow. It did this about a week ago when it was in the 30's and I figured it was probably the battery since it was old so I replaced it. Fresh battery and the truck still cranks slow.
Normally, I would chalk it up to the cold weather, but I had an 88 f150 last winter with the same set up, but 145,000 miles and it was beat to hell. That truck cranked over fast and strong even on the coldest days without thinking twice.
What's up with my 95? Why is it slow to start? It's outside idling now just fine and it drives fine, but it cranks slow when it's cold.
how your battery cables? if they are corroded that's a common sign, Good grounds?, do you have a battery with a high number of CCA (cold cranking amps)usually tells you on top of the battery. good luck
do what Rj suggested first, if it still does it, you will probably need to check voltage drop of everything, and if possible, how many amps the starter is sucking down.
BTW: -20 here last night, my 88 fired right up at 3 in the morning, even though the size of the battery and condition of the cables said it shouldn't!
Yep. Check voltage at the battery and then recheck it further down the system, like at the starter. There should be no noticeable voltage drop. If there is, clean up the connections or replace the cables if they're bad. Check your grounds too, if they're nasty or ready resistance, replace or clean up the cables and unbolt where the cables are grounded to and go at it with a wire brush until it's nice shiny metal to bolt it back to. Then cover all your connections and little exposed portions of wire with vasoline or dielectric grease.
Sometimes the starters will short out casuing it to turn almost at a snail pace while sucking down the battery. It can tear up the battery by putting such a load on it, warped plates etc etc...
Remove starter and do a bench test, or bring it to a local place to get it bench tested there.
I have a 2002 F150 4.6 V8 After the truck sits at least 12hrs or longer it takes 3 - 5 sec to turn over. I turn the key and it wants to turn over but doesnt until 5 sec. I replaced the battery with no change. The only thing is that it will start normal if only sitting for a couple of hrs. Weather temp is not a factor. I just replaced the factory battery 7 yrs old
