Brakes

I am installing pads on a set of '77 discs. I am doing a conversion on a '69. Two questions:
1) The calipers did not have any pads when I got them so I have no idea where the clip included with the new pads goes. I assume it is some sort of anti rattle/ retaining clip but I can't figure out how to install it. Does it go on the inner or outer pad and where does it fit on the pad?
2) These are the first floating calipers I have worked on. When installing the calipers I assume you drive the retainer and spring in from the side. Do you work from the inside or the outside? Sure seems like it will be a tight fit regardless. How much force is reasonable?

Thanks

Steve, The anti-rattle springs (look like little leaf springs)sit on top of the retainers. It is a tight fit but a little WD40 and a plastic hammer should be the maximum force used. I tapped in one side and pushed in the retainer spring combo on the other side with my thumb. Work from the outside (more comfortable). Use about a table spoon of hi-temp silicone on the inner shoe to caliper piston area, and bend the ears over to the caliper on the outer pad and your rattling pads and caliper problem will be over. I did this Saturday in about ten minutes per wheel.

The clip/retainer that you are talking about goes on the inner pad. It clips onto the ear on either end of the pad (I usually put mine towards the back). It is made to hold the inner pad tight in the caliper, to reduce noise. If you left it out, the pad would be a little loose and may click or bang when you first hit the brakes. Not a terrible thing, but would be less stress to the pad if it was in place.
