Yeah, main thing is to keep the moisture out, this helps prevent the problem (so running an open air cleaner and driving though deep snow is gonna make things worse) although I did have to get 2 guys with diesels new air cleaners later that day at work, the boxes were just packed, even on a new 6.4L, so there is still some design issues as far as the air cleaner goes. The air compressor is a good example. When the carb is sucking air it is condensing it to an extent and and just as with an aerosol can if you hold it upside down the fluid will come out cold even on the hotest day, so your just supercooling the water/moisture that is coming through the carb with the air and when it's extra cold outside it makes the problem worse. Even on a humid day in the summer on our older tractors you can see the frost/condensation build up on the carb/intake pipe. There's prolly something scientific on wikipedia or somewhere.
Hi, live in the mountains of Colorado. I've had icing problems during the Spring-not real moist here until then. Had a quad with dual snorkels and a fresh air intake to along side the headlights. The snorkels were regular nowadays air intake hoses and it took a little to figure where to put them, but I fabricated a mount above each exhaust manifold and just hung it there for the winter.
If you cannot do this and want the carb spacer, find one that's an inch thick and drill some long holes and use something like barbs to connect small heater hoses from left to right side.
PS if you look down the throat of the carb, the venturis are usually coated w/ a thick "frost"
