Programming Question

I bought my truck used. I highly suspect that a previous owner made some programming changes to the PCM. I checked with the last owner, and he thinks the same thing, but he didn't do it. I don't know the original owner, but I suspect the truck is a retired fleet truck.

Is there a way to verify the programming is stock or not on these trucks?

Without having the original tuner it may be hard to tell if it is in fact tuned. The dealer should be able to tell you by hooking it up to the systems they have.

At what RPM does it shift into the next gear when you have it wide open? Stock should be around 4700, mine with a Diablosport tuner shifts at about 5000 rpm. That may be how you can tell.

Ford will gladley reprogram your truck to stock for 75-80 dollers i think. They should be able to tell if its not oem on it as well.

I don't want it reprogrammed back to stock. Its more of a matter of curiosity. It runs like a raped ape now......

It should run like a raped ape being a regular cab short box. Very good looking truck. I had a 97 Lariat like yours but it only had the 4.6 as the 5.4 was not out yet and it ran pretty damn good. I would imagine a 5.4 in that small of a truck would make it quite fun!

One of the things that suggests its been programmed is that it has no top speed cut off. On a long stretch of interstate, there's no telling how fast it'll go, but I can testify that burying the needle well past 100 is not a problem. And it still has pedal left at 100. Its way faster than one can drive comfortably. No rev limiter, no speed limiter, very firm shifts, ridiculous acceleration. It's like driving a car rather than a truck. And that's with 33's and 3.55 gears....

Pretty good chance it has a tune then, it should be speed limited in the mid 90's. Also at WOT the 1st to 2nd shift with a tune is around 5500 IIRC or maybe even more stock it is no where near that high.
