I am swapping out a 4.9 in my 95 f150 and am wondering if anyone has done, or has an idea about how to support the transmission but still have the ability to move the truck when the engine is out. I am going to be doing this in my garage which of course has no heat, but better than outside. The problem is if i pull the truck into the garag there is no room to get the hoist in the garage too, and if if leave it outside while i am removeing and reinstalling the engine, i am laying on the icy/snowy concrete. So I am wondering if there is a way to use a piece of 4x4 or something to keep the transmission supported yet be able to push the truck back and forward.
If it's a 4x4 you may find this is a non issue because the transfer case will counter balance the trans, but if not then yes you can use whatever is handy to support the front of the trans like a ratchet strap or rope between frame rails for example, it won't be holding a lot of weight so it doesn't have to be anything massive.
ratchet strap to the frame, duh, how could i have not thought of that. that should be exactly what i need to do, and i have a couple of pretty heavy duty straps that will work pretty well i think.
stupid question im sure, but will i be able to shift this into neutral without the engine attached and still be able to install the replacement motor without any issues?
