I had recently bought a F350 to replace a F250 that had been totaled by a run away truck in a parking lot (truck driver got out without brakes being set, came out of gear and no more truck for me). Recently, the trans started to go and it started to bog down right after I cranked it (not sure why). Then when I went replace the stock downpipe, I noticed some oil leaking around the passenger head. Both my friend and I were surprised to find a crack in the head, however small, it was still a crack. Don't know when or how it even happened. Needless to say that I nearly lost it. So I traded it off to a dealership for a 2000 Dodge 2500 5.9l Cummins with a NV4500 (bad-a$$ trans). It's really hard to find good used Ford Powerstrokes within a few hundred miles of where I live, I know because I looked a lot. I have owned Cummins before and really loved them, but had it not had a NV4500, I wouldn't have touched it (auto trans in 96-02 Dodges aren't worth a s%#t if you ask me).
So for now I am Powerstrokeless and not happy about that. I am happy with my Cummins though. If I run across a good Powerstroke that I can afford, you can bet that I will buy it on the spot. Until then, I'm a Cummins man all the way.
hmm.. i wouldn't have hesitated to throw a new head on that thing. heads aren't too bad to find and get rebuilt and such. i just rebuilt a set and it cost me around $800, but i of course used some aftermarket parts in there.
One thing i HATE about the NV4500 trans.. IT HAS NO DRAIN PLUG!!!! so you cannot change your tranny fluid so those trucks go for 100k, 200k miles without having new tranny fluid put in them.
Good luck with the new ride though.
ON EDIT: btw, TAKE THAT DUMB SILENCER RING OUT OF YOUR TURBO!!!!! LoL. you will be very surprised at how loud that turbo will get when you do that if you haven't already. holy crap hx35's are loud with out the silencer ring!!
Good luck with the new truck man. But the NV4500 has it's faults. Point in case, the 5th gear. The nut backs off and bad things happen. Or if you have any power to it, that 5th gear will give you nightmares. But other than that, they are solid. Good luck to you man, and don't forget us.
I still plan on participating in the forums when ever I can lend a hand and hopefully I'll run across a good fixer-upper powerstroke to get. My f350 was my primary vehicle and I couldn't afford the price to fix it or the downtime it would of taken to fix. That's why I traded and hope to find a powerstroke to play with on the side so I can take my time and fix the way I want it and just play around. And if i break something playing with it I don't have to do a rush job on it to drive it to work.
So for now I'm on the lookout for a powerstroke, even though I don't have much to spend right now. I just really love hunting for them.
i love a cummins. better motor then a powerstroke if you ask me.
and i love there manaul tranny! wayyyyy better then the zf5. but what can i say i love my 444 with my dana 60. wouldnt trade it for anything!
good luck with the search.
Mitch
I know hind sight is 20/20 but I will say it just to throw it out there. My truck was involved in a accident with a banged up bed. THEY TOTALED IT! I held out on the offers (about 2+ weeks) and they gave me 13K for the truck! I then bought the truck back (never left my driveway) for 1,500 dollars! I put a new bed on and I am still going strong today. I would STRONGLY recomened anyone who has their truck "totaled" to look in to buying it back for parts if nothing else. Just my 2 NID
