I was looking at buying some new glow plugs online at rockauto. I found the motorcraft/beru zd1a which is supposed to be for my style glow plug system. I noticed the end on them looks nothing like mine. They have a spade end where mine has what they call the bullet end. Does this mean the PO converted the system to the solid states?
If it has yhe bullet ends that is the later system if everything has been converted (controller) then you are good. If he just changed the gps I have read that that doesn't work so good.
Check the rear of engine/top of the bell housing for a large electrical object with a plastic cap...... that should be the Solid State GP controller if it was converted...... or just follow the GP wires to source and tell us what ya find.
Well I looked. Ive got the long round thing that is screwed in the back of the engine. That is supposed to be my controller I think. But there are no wires connected to the top of it. I have some other weird looking electrical thing to the left of it will all kinds of wires running to it. Could that be it? Or is that something else?
FYI as I have read you can use the late (bullet) style GP's with the old style relay no problem but you can not use the early (spade) style GP's with the new style controller as it may/will burn them out.
Can someone point a link out to do the conversion as I have been thinking about adding the solid state sometime in the future. Thought today I read that it senses ohms through the pcm so how does the conversion work is what I'd like to dig up some information on. I know it's here somewhere.
i wouldnt mess with the backward compatibility issue, coming from my engine i replaced i learned a lot and when it comes to starting. There is no amount of rigging or tweaking that will suffice for the real thing. Get the real deal controller for your rig, or in your case the one it has been converted to, check all wires and leads, ensure it is clicking, does the wts light work, is it wired to work? how about time it is on if it does function, too short too long? if not then check the GP's. too many bad ones and the system will go inactive. One or two down and it will be a harder to start. Get the test light on there and touch the tips with it connected to a battery positive side and if it lights, then it is probably good to go. If not then pull them all and replace. cheaper in the long run and always always go berus. I am glad to see you were doing that in the first place but i have to say it. I roasted a set of autolites and bosch in one week. They suck ***** and are wothless. I cant believe that people still buy them, the people that assemble them or work at the plant that makes them should be ashamed and flogged!

sences ohms through the pc what. I need to know the location of the pcm on mine.
The solid state works by resistance on the gp's. When one goes bad it wont stay on as long with two or more it will just flash on and go back off. I don't have the info on the conversion as I like the manual switch myself but it is not for everybody.
