IMHO that is a judgment call. I personally leave the engine in, because I am sure it can be done in the truck. I can certainly understand your desire to remove it for easier access, though.
I've drilled out a busted alternator bolt on a truck I had as a kid. Not fun. I'd pull it so I know I would have enough room. If you can wait until tax time - do the mods while you have it out. If you need it on the road drop it back in and go.
Now if were on my van - I'd be drilling right there in the engine bay simply because its too hard getting that monster out.
i would take the fornt clip off it then the rad and grill headlights ect comes off in one peace its only a hand fulll of bolts and undo some plugs and batt.I just did a cab swap and that how i took it apart
