I got to thinking today about trying to rig up individual rear brakes on my truck, much like a tractors. This way when one wheel spins i can hit the brake for that one and get power to the other wheel and hopefully get the truck moving. I figure I could make them mechanically operated by 2 levers in the cab, one for each wheel. Anyone ever attempt this before? Advice and comments are welcome. I figure its the best solution i have at the moment. I cant afford to get a locker for the rearend, or buy a 4wd truck, soooo I gotta make what ive got work.
you can also use your parking brake to get moving. partially depress the parking brake, go one click at a time until both rear tires start spinning. i have gotten out of alot of slippery situations that way.
The concept been used a long time by baja guys and dune buggies. They are called cutting brakes, used mostly for turning. You can search there are alot of companies that sell everything to do it but you would have to run double the brake lines. Alot of work, time and money. If I were you I'd get a limited slip from a donor vehicle and swap it in. Swap out just the limited carrier assembly and keep your gears.
A guy up the road from me is rigging up a valve shutoff to his front and back brakes so he can use just one or the other or both. You could get such a cutoff valve (the ones he was going to get were electronically actuated) and rig one on each line once they separate in the back. Then you could close the one that the tire is not spinning on, which would not allow the pressure to make it to the non spinning tire and instead send it to the spinning tire. Doing this you could use your normal brake pedal.
Hope this makes sense. I would have to agree that it would be easiest to swap in a LS from another truck. There is a guy on the offroad section who re-does his LS's and in the end they become so tight they are like a locker.
What nat is talking about are line lock solinoids. I run one on my drag car to lock the front brakes for staging. The way it works is you energize the solinoid then step on the brake pedal. Then release the pedal and as long as the solinoid is on it will hold the pressure. Not real good application on a trucks rear axle being out in the elements. Not really what they are designed for. Some of the names out there are Roll Control & Line Loc. With a tag of 50-140 $'s plus times 2, You may as well buy a LS.
Still say look for a limited slip.
That would take some serious plumbing to use the hydraulic brakes.
Basicly shut off all the brakes except the spining tire.
That would be expensive with all the parts you would need, and a locker would wind up cheaper.
The only other route would be use the parking brakes.
Seperate the lines and run each to a hand set lever like some of the larger trucks had back in the 60's and 70's.

J/K with yah. It reminded me of the late nights years ago my girlfriend (now wife) would push my 65 bug, with a faulty rebuilt starter, down the road to get it started. Of course the car only weighed 1650lbs with me in it.
Still think a limited slip or locker will be about the same money when you start pricing parts and do a much better job..
I absolutly agree that limited slip or locker would be better. Im hoping to make something up with stuff i already have. I'm only budgeting about 20 bucks for this little endeavor........
I think your idea of rigging off the e-brake would work... with my old chevys open rear I used to keep 2 4' lengths of 4x4 and 500lb of sandbags in the back...worst case I would have to rock it out, but it beat getting stuck...my g/f at the time was worthless
that wil help some...the resaon I kept the 4x4's back there was to wedge one under the spinning tire...it would give the spinning tire something to bit into as well as force some torque to the wheel with natural traction....
now if I didnt have and lsd on the dually I would deffinatly do your brake idea.....you could do some awesome freaking donuts being able to stand on it with one back tire locked up
