i am about to rebuild a AOD to replace the C6 in my truck and i am going to use TCI Auto 438905 - TCI Pro Super Transmission Overhaul Kits. so when i get it built i was wanting to get a better torque converter. i am running a stock 302 for now but i am going to build a 347 stroker for it some time next year. i dont know what stall converter to get. it is a daily driver but i like to race with it every now and then so a stock converter isnt rally the best. any suggestions on what stall to get. oh yea i dont tow with this truck either
If your going to build a AOD for a 347 stroker i would look into using the wide ratio gear sets from a 4R70W , there better & stronger . Shift kit is good & trans cooler also . I wouldn't get a hi stall converter untill you build the motor & pick your cam & intake, Depending on where your motor starts to make good HP will tell you what stall you need ....JMO .....Lew
so i would be ok with a 2000-2400 rpm stall? and what exactly does locking and non locking mean... srry im not real educated on automatics so this is kinda new new area for me....
ok i have found some info about the 4R70W and it is better but it is electronically controlled to what would i have to do to make it work? and that site with the info on it said its best to be used with a locking converter.
If I'm understanding the beef-up story, they use AOD-E and 4R70W parts in the AOD case--cases are similar, pans are the same. You can sort through the propaganda at TCI and other sites to see what they change in the transmissions they sell. Input shafts, drums, stuff like that there:
As for a torque converters...a lock up converter locks up like a manual trans clutch under cruise situations. I'm not sure if a higher stall converter can be lock up. If you go with a non-lock up converter, and your stall is higher than your cruise rpm, that could be trouble.
A high stall converter is going to build more heat also, so a cooler is probably in order.
Gears etc make a difference in what stall is better. Depending on what you do to the 347, a good stall for it might not be a good one for the 302.
