Dual tanks

What makes the fuel switch tanks when you it the switch? Is it just vacuum from the other fuel pump that makes the valve switch or is it something else? only my front tank works. when you flip it to the rear the gauge will move but it wont run on the rear tank. Is the rear pump just bad?? Truck is a 89 f250, 5.8

Could be the pump, could be wiring to the pump, could be what selects the pump.

About 5 PSI of fuel pressure from the pump in the selected tank. The pressure snaps the mechanical valve/reservoir to the tank that is supplying the fuel pressure.

ok thanks, how were the dual tanks in the carb'd f250s? since theres no pump in the tank was there an electric valve?

Yes there was a solenoid valve.
