We just got Dad's truck back from the dealership. It's a 2003 6.0 auto with about 160k miles. The dealership just put new erg, oil cooler, turbo center rotating assembly, an injector, cylinder heads, headgasket, and the water pump for $8060 plus $400 arp head studs. It sounds good and seems to be running right but I heard a noise I wanted to clear up right away.
When you cycle the key what I'm assuming is the glow plugs used to make a steady clicking until the light went off. Now when you cycle the key it makes this sort of clicking grinding noise. Next time Dad's in town he's gonna run it to the dealership, but he lives 43 miles away so I was wondering if any of you had an idea.
The grinding noise you are referring to is probably the vacuum pump. My truck makes both the clicking and what can be described as a grinding type sound as well, always has, since new. Now I assume it is the vacuum pump but someone else may know better, I'm just saying that what you describe sounds normal.
it may be the pcm/ficm tune you here. the glow plugs dont make noise by the way well not unless the tips break off then they make a bunch rattling noise.
my guess would be you are hearing the spool valves
