advantages:
-better tire clearance
-changes the stance
disadvantages:
-does nothing whatsoever for the performance of the suspension or ride quatlity (unless you get a relly nice kit, which costs about the same as a 4" suspension lift)
-can hyperextend shocks if you dont replace them
-your wheel alignment will be off somewhat and can cause uneven wear
Here's the dealeo... I just installed Moog cc844 springs. Raised it 1 7/8". I have ext cab 4x4 with a 351...pretty heavy. 6 cyl might get 2". It is the same spring found in 3/4 and 1 ton fords from years past. They are thicker, but not taller. They will fit! do not let the alignment guy tell you they won't. Don't let him tell you it can't be aligned... it will.
Will not over extend shocks... b/s called on that one. It will simply not fully extend with stock shocks. No offense extrm
Ride quality does change. Mine become a little "sportier". Not near as much roll and floating.
Springs can be bought for less than $80. Alignment and installation probably run you $150 together.
If you have any mechanical ability whatsoever, you can install the springs for free.
I like it. Still have a little rake for towing. Better all around to me!
If you get the leveling kit, you will not have any rake left for towing or hauling. At least not that I have ever seen. I used to have it and took it off, because the truck handled and rode worse. It was properly aligned.

Isn't there a way to stiffen up the back end after you level up the front so that the rear doesn't sag when you're towing?
