replacement radiator questions

well it happened. 28k miles and i noticed a leak below the left side of the radiator. i took it to the dealer and they had a new radiator installed within 4.5 hrs. my original raditor was leaking at the seams even WITH the venturi-T kit installed a long time ago.

i have 2 questions:

1. has ford figured out what is causing these radiators to fail?

2. is my new replacement radiator any better than the original radiator?

my truck will be out of the 3yr warranty in 1.5 yrs. i hope my new radiator lasts for at least 150k miles like the one on my 2000 7.3 psd did before i traded it in...........

good question...just hit 28K on my truck, so I am on my orginal radiator. Had the venturi-T completed at 600 miles.

I don't think there was a design change, rather there was a bad batch made...at least that was the orginal assumption I am thinking.

I separated the end tank from the radiator while towing a 22,000lb trailer up a steep grade. No temperature increase, just BANG.... incurred a 900 tow bill for the trailer that ford refuses to cover..

Just had mine go at 38,000 miles, Ford paid for it anyway.

Mine was changed at 36K and at 48K it is still using antifreeze..I have an appointment next week at the dealer..who knows... there seems to be some lingering problems with these motors and antifreeze disappearing.

I've read about people on here (and another forum) who are on their 3rd or 4th radiators. Also, guys with 2010 trucks with leaking radiators. You'd think Ford would try to build an acceptable replacement, but as of now, I don't believe they have released a radiator that is any better than the originals. Ford engineers are probably too busy perfecting the 6.7 trucks, since I think that truck will make or break the Diesel Super Duty line-up.

that sure is a bummer when your "replacement" radiator is also defective.

i hope these "replacement" radiators are defect free once our warranties expire...........

I'm on my third radiator as of a couple of weeks ago at 45k miles. I had the venturi T installed when they were first released. Dealership said I would have to pay for the radiator this time since I was out of warranty. I called Customer Service and whined a little and they said that they would work with the dealer to get it partially covered. When I went to pick it up it was completely covered under warranty. I fully expect to have another one installed in about 15k miles.

i talked to a guy who worked for ford for 28 years and open his own shop, my new diesel shop, he was sayin; there is no way around it just a bad build, " who ever built that p.o.s. radiator should be shot" , on a lighter note he said that the tranny for the 6. 4 is bullet proof so go buy a jegs all aluminium radiator and do it your self, the only right way.

With all of these defective radiators, why dont we all just get an aftermarket rad? Doesnt seem prudent to risk being stranged out on a long haul in the middle of nowhere.

I have a 2008 F-450 and still on original radiator at 1.5 years/37K miles. But the day it blows, is the day I skip the warranty repair and I buy an aftermarker radiator.

#1 - I don't think there is an aftermarket radiator available... I mean, I'm sure something could be rigged to work, but no direct drop in.

#2 - I think if you ran into engine problems in the future, Ford would pretty much blame your radiator for the problem - making your 5/100k Engine Warranty pretty much worthless...

I'd rather just let Ford keep replacing them, until I'm completely out of warranty.

I have a new radiator here in the box. When it first let go, I shot an email to my service advisor asking for a quote for replacement and when I didn't get a prompt reply, I bought a new one for $420.00. My thinking was that since my truck was 2k outside the 36k warranty, I'd be on my own. After picking up the new one, I got a call saying Ford would cover the radiator. I think I'll just keep my "cheap" replacement just in case. I don't know if any modifcation to a stock one might be in order to improve on it, but I might just take the new one to a radiator shop and see if they can "improve it".

Wonder what they will say as far as aftermarket replacements?
