I just did a little 500 mile road trip in a 2000 Excursion. Not my beloved 2000 Excursion V10 but my friends "new to him" 2000 Excursion PSD. All I can say is wow, those PSD guys are truth stretchers. I have driven a ton of PSDs, but never had an apples to apples comparison. Both trucks are MY2000, both 4x4 and I think both have 4.30s. His truck was running 2400RPMS at 75mph and mine runs about the same. From Castle Rock Colorado to Witchita Kansas his truck averaged 13.8mpg with the cruise set at 75mph. My last trip from California to Colorado in my truck averaged 14.4. My X has 132,000 and his has 143,000. Let the flames fly.
I never did go under his truck and check the tag on the diff. But they both run the same RPMs at the same speed. I'm running 265/75/16s and his looked to be stock sized as well.
One thing I learned long ago is to be wary of peoples mpg numbers. There are so many ways to mess up the numbers. One of the most common I found is people running a quarter of a tank of fuel or less and posting that mpg number. Run a minimum of 3/4 of a tank of fuel thru the truck and refill stopping at the same amount of clicks as the last fillup. If that 7.3 Ex had 3.73 gears the mpg would have been quite a bit better.

I think you need to average several tankfulls to account for the variables such as different gas pumps and cutoff points. Certainly more than 1/2 tank.
I had a guy claim 27MPG from his car but on a trip we got only 23MPG so I take MPG figures with a grain of salt, also you cannot trust the computer readouts, in my truck the computer is always .8MPG higher than the actual, in my car they are plus or minus two mpg from actual.

I put over 130,000 miles on my 2000 PSD excursion and on the HWY it would always get 17-18 mpg, hand calculated. One trip from MN to IL with the cruise set just under 80 we had it getting 21mpg. Could have driven to Ohio on a tank of fuel, 800 mile range. Same truck would get 11 towing a 8500# 28' enclosed race car trailer.
Your friend must have swapped gears because the only gears you could get from the factory were 3;73's.
I really miss my old beast for road trips and wish I could have just kept it around.
Two weeks ago I agian went to Chicago to buy a 42' GS enclosed trailer, on the way there the 08 V10 was getting 12.5, on the way home with the trailer I was getting 7.5mpg at 70. Trailer empty weights 7400#'s The V10 towed it with ease and I could have just as easily being doing 75-80 as the trailer made the 1 ton ride a heck of a lot better.
Love the way the v10 tows and I am not defending the PSD. I have owned three PSD's, one 7.3 and two 6.0's all treated me well. The 6.0 was a thirsty pig when towing. With that said I will not be owning another one anytime soon.
