Guys, (and gals), I need your collective PhD’s, my 2001 excursion need a new trans. My local options are: 1.Factory rebuild 3 yr 100k warranty $3029 2.“Heavy Duty” factory rebuild 3 yr 100K warranty $3927 3.Local rebuild 12month 12k warranty $2452 Anyone have any knowledge on the Heavy duty factory rebuild? I’ve heard of John Woods as the west coast go to guy, but I’m Nor-Cal so it’s probably more $$ and would involve some serious travel. I tow a 27’ toy hauler and with 5 kids we push the limit weight wise so if I have to spend the money it makes sense to upgrade. Has anyone had a JW Trans shipped to them and installed by a local shop? How did that go? Any info/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks! john
IMHO... You cant go wrong with the JW tranny... Bite the bullet and do it.
I will say I have the Ford HD/commercial tranny in my wifes Excursion, and other then a loose as hell valve body its a good tight tranny that has held up for 55k so far with 37's...
Several of us (myself, Stewart, Nolan, Nick) are in NorCal and we would all go John Wood.
I HAVE gone to John's....twice! Once for his built trans, and then a second time this last January for live-tuning with Jody at John's shop.
Even though Jody was gonna be 2 hours away from me in Modesto doing live-tuning, once again I drove the 9 hours to John's place, this time for live-tuning, because I love hanging out at John's and talking with him, picking his brain.
He epitomizes the FTE Brotherhood, he's that good of a guy!
When I can afford it (at this rate, it'll be never...) I plan on driving down again and having John build me another trans, this time for my F250.
Where in NoCal are you located? I see you said Bay Area. South Bay? East Bay?
I just ordered a John Woods tranny this week. He is shipping it to me in Davis Ca. Shipping round trip is about $300. The tranny is $3400 for the towmaster level. It is rated at 375hp. Warranty is 3 years or 50k. He also said there is no difference in the warranty if you install or he installs. The tranny should be here next week, late. I have a friend with a shop where I am going to install it.
