Shredding Belts

My truck, 97 F350 4X4 CC, is shredding serp belts. It's eaten 3 lately. It only takes the first rib off, or at least I catch it before any more go. It looks like the belt may jump on the pulleys and one of the lipped pulleys slices the belt. The tensioner is probably no more than 3 years old. Any suggestions? I will probably be slow with checking replies, internet is out at the house so I have to come to the library to check stuff.

Maybe the tensioner pulley or the idler pulley is siezing up.
Are all the pulleys lined up? The vacuum pump pulley can be installed too shallow causing this to happen.

most likely a pulley is out of alignment. take the belt off and check all the pulleys for excessive play. and use a straight edge to check the alignment

I have heard of people having this problem and unable to solve it. I think they just ran with one rib missing.

+1 Also make sure that the power steering pulley is installed properly and make sure that none of the pulleys are warped or damaged.

I had this problem once, but it turned out that it was my fault. when i installed the belt it was off just a tiny bit and eventually tore one rib off and thats how it stayed for probably a year and a half or more. only reason i replaced it was b/c it started to squeek at start up. like everyone said. check all the pulleys and make sure they are all aligned correctly and check them all for slack when you take the belt off again. the main pulleys i have noticed like to go out are the idlers, the A/C compressor and the vaccuum pump. these are the only pulleys my truck has ever had replaced and it will hit 300k miles in the next couple days. LoL

i think the early 94's had 7 rib belts and after that had 8 rib belts. but that doesn't seem to be the issue...

Could be if he got a new alternator. the pulleys that come on them aren't the right ones. they are the 7 rib i think and you gotta change it out with your pulley. but he should notice that when he puts the belt on. i mean its right there in your face when you put the belt on

When my water pump was going out I had the same thing happen ,I would take the belt off and check out all the above and also grab the fan see if it moves at all.

Back at the library. Thanks for the tips. It is the A/C pulley. I took the belt off to check all of the pulleys and sure enough, the A/C pulley had some slop. I replaced the compressor about 2 years ago. A tech at the parts house I use told me to check the orifice tube. I didn't remember it being dirty when I changed it out, but I will pop it out and check it. Basically, he said if it is dirty, I probably should have changed the condenser before, had will have to change it out and replace the comp. Something to do with teflon clogging up the condenser, causing high head pressure, leading to premature failure.
I'll keep y'all posted.

Thanks for the TSB. The tensioner isn't very old, and still felt smooth. The only thing I could find is the bad A/C pulley.
