Hi,
I am a little new here. I have an 05 FX4 PSD. I am interested in upgrading from a stock exhaust to 4" turbo back exhaust. I am looking at a 4" Silverline (FS104-T304 stainless or FS104409-409 Stainless). Which type, 304 or 409, is better? Will the 409 eventually rust or just loose its shine. Not real sure which is the best for the money. Also, where I live emissions testing is not required, however, I am not real sure what the law is for not having a CAT. I would like any input on pros & cons of doing this. Thanks for the help guys.
If You delete the Cat you will help increase the flow of the exhaust lower your EGT'S and eliminate the restriction that the cat causes. If You do remove it, as I did, save it in the event that You run into a problem ie... testing or a nosey inspector. I got my cat delete pipe from puredieselpower.com it bolted right up and all the bends were to factory spec. and the length was precise. It took about an hour to do the deed. start w/penetrating oil around your clamps and cat inlets and outlets right after you place your order. It makes life easy! I just got my MBRP stainless 3.5" downpipe and have yet to install it as I am waiting for an EGR delete straight pipe that I just ordered. I intend to do the EGR "Y" pipe delete after removing the stock downpipe in order to make more room for the EGR pipe fix.
Exhaust was just about the easiest mod I've done (High Idle would be easiest). Took about 1.5 hours from start to finish. I used a 4" downpipe because that's what came with the kit...it took a little "persuasion" but all went in very well. I used Magnaflow and was well pleased. The kit I bought (River City Diesel, $399 shipped + $50 for tip) was 304 stainless. I used the cat delete pipe that came with it but kept my cat just in case.
Your post says you are in Arizona, not sure how stringent the inspection process is there. Check w/some Diesel P/U folks out there and ask them. If You get a "good" response find out where they went for thier inspection and go to that inspection station. Emission laws are Federal, however States differ as to How they inspect them.
I don't have inspections where I'm at...one thing a buddy of mine has done in the past is to gut his cat. It looks stock but there is nothing in there. I just kept mine, it only takes about 10 min. to swap it out.
