Ford sells smooth primed paint-to-match caps and chrome ones too. I just ordered a pair of paint to match for my 2010 XLT from Tasca Ford in Rhode Island. Part numbers are:
9L3Z-17D742-BAPTM (Right cap)
9L3Z-17D743-BAPTM (Left cap)
...around $27 each plus shipping plus the cost of having them painted by a body shop
not sure of the numbers (or the cost) for the chrome ones.
Do I need to use special primer and paint on these plastic skull caps? Planned on using Duplicolor primer and paint. Been told I should use primer and paint made for plastics like they use on bumpers, etc.
If you're going to spray them yourself, make sure you use an adhesion promoter first. Follow the directions to the letter and the finish will grip much better and last a lot longer.
Here is a good source for information on how to remove the glass. You will need a long, very thin-bladed flat screwdriver and about the only way to loosen the glass is working from the outside bottom of the mirror and, once you get the mirror glass to separate, keep the mirror tilted the same way and start working the screwdriver alternately in both directions around the attaching plate. You will hear creaking as the clips release and all of a suden it will pop off. http://www.kwmuth.com/techsupport/pdfs/21000960.pdf
