Gas tank issues

So I have the front and rear tanks on the 86 Lariat XLT. Front works fine, switch between the front and the rear, and the gauge drops off to empty. Tried to fill the rear, the back pressure switch on the pump kicks the pump off. The previous owner says he never used the rear tank. I have not tried to run the truck off of the rear tank, don't know what I would be sucking into the motor.

I would like to get the rear working for longer road trips. Any tips on where to start?

See if it will run off the rear tank. If it does, run that tank as low as you can and replace the sending unit in the tank.

Correct, I can't get any gas to go into the rear tank. Since the previous owner didn't use it, I worry about what is in the tank and am leery to just put the rear on suction and see what happens.
