Hey guys I got my truck in an the guy I got it off of said it was started bout 1 year ago an the last time it was started the guy said that when he started it the exhaust glowed cherry red due to mice building a nest in the exhaust. How would be a good way to start it after sitting so long? I was told to put oil in the valves an let it sit a day then do it over then pull the plugs an start it then out the plugs back in then start it up. Also been told to just put gas in the carb an a battery an turn the key an also been told to pull the plugs run a file under them to clean them soak them in gas put a new battery in it an top everything off & clean the battery termnals an pour some oil on top of the valves an pour some gas in the carb an then try to start it. How should I go bout trying to start it so I won't damage the engine?
My truck was sitting for about a year or so before I got it. I did the basic tune up on it; plugs, wires, cap and rotor and oil change. I then pulled the distributor and used a drill and spun the oil pump to get new fluid moving around. I then turned the key and it fired right up!
I would check the oil and coolant, maybe pull the dist cap off and make sure its clean, dry and not cracked, dump some fresh gas in it and try it out,if it runs good then drop the fluids, flush and clean, replace all fluids, filters and go from there.I would also take of that plugged muffler before I started it.
Pull all the plugs, get some LPS penetrating oil spray every plug hole for about 10 seconds kinda try to get all around in there repeat 3 times till 2/3 of the can is gone. Let it sit over night.
Get new battery do a tune up. lay a towel over each side of the engine. Ground the coil wire. remove the mouse house.
Hit the key & let her rip for 10 seconds. repeat with the LPS Pen oil
Hit it again for 10 more seconds install plugs & wires fire it up. Bring it up off idle 1200-1400 rpms for 1 min to burn out any remaining oil in exhaust bring it up to operating temp. check for any leaks, change your oil & good to go.
This might seem like allot to do but when you get a new truck you never know if there was any rust in the bores. You want to get the rust broken loose & put into an oil suspension so it can be scavenged.
A dry fire will install any rust into your ring lands. Then you have a nice little grinder. Which ends up putting 30,000 miles on it in about 1 hour of driving.
I have done this with trucks that sat for over 25 years works almost every time even when they are seized tight.
When you spin her up you have the oil in there coming out pretty fast 150 psi I did not use a towel once
What a mess. After ya get her up to temp shut it down & spray some Gunk degreaser all over it, usr the non foaming kind, let her sit for an hour & hose it off.
