U joints and Trans case problems
I was gettin ready to replace the U joints on the rear driveshaft of my 77 F150 4x4, but when i pulled them out, they looked fine. The joints make noise when you get up to about 20 mph. After seein they were fine, i go to the front driveshaft. With the truck in 2wd, i spin the output shaft from the trans case, with the rear shaft off. The front shaft spins also. You can stop the spinning on the front, and the rear will spin fine... but as soon as you take your hand off the front it spins again. Put it in 4wd, both spin normally. Someone told me this could be due to solidified fluid in the trans case bc the truck sat for a few years. Anyone heard of this? I figured it was my front u joints because the front axles will spin sometimes when driving in 2wd... and the hubs are fine btw. Anyone think the trans case fluid will affect this? If so, what kind of gear lube, how much and where to fill?
