Hi guys. I’ve been a long time lurker here for quite some time and have spent many hours searching this forum for the answers of the many questions I had about my truck, but this one seems to escape me. I own a 2002 F250 SD XLT with a 7.3L auto with 85000 miles. The truck has sat for most of the summer as it was not a primary vehicle for me as I mostly used it to haul wood in the winter or the occasional trip to work in bad weather. Anyway, the last couple of weeks I’ve been driving the truck back and forth to work, 65 mile round trip, mix of back roads and highway. The truck has developed a shutter, or chatter when coming to a stop. My first thought was brakes, i.e. rusty rotors had chewed up the pads. No big deal. I replaced the front and rear pads, and rotors (they were in rough shape) along with new pins and new caliper brackets for the front, the front pins were welded in by rust. While I had it apart I inspected and lubed the front hub needle bearing, and pumped some grease into the ABS sensor hole in the front wheel bearing. All seems tight with no grinding from the wheel bearing and there is no sign of any contamination coming through the knuckle seal or hub o-ring. I also replace the sway bar bushings with ones from Energy Suspension as I was getting a clunk under my feet. So my dilemma is this. After basically replacing every brake component my truck still shutters below 30mph when coming to a stop, which is my main concern, and the “clunk” has returned, but goes away when the sway bar is disconnected. I have no visible play in the front wheel bearings or ball joints, and all the tie rod ends seem fine. I see no indication of wear in the driveshafts, front or rear, and the shutter is present with the hubs locked or unlocked (swapped in Ford manual hubs years ago). I pretty much at a loss as to what else it could be. Anyone have any ideas as to the next place I should start looking? I'm not looking forward to bringing it to the dealer, but I'm afraid that is where I am heading.
You may be dealing with a tire issue or a bent wheel issue, not a brake issue.
That had crossed my mind, but you would think it would happen all the time. The tire seem to be fairly evenly worn. No cupping or scrubbing. If anything they have signs of being over inflated, worn in the middle more than the edges. I'll jack it up again and see if I can see any unusual run out on the rims.
The best way I can describe the shudder if you imagine that you are coming to a stop with a standard and you forget to push in the clutch.
I had a 94 Ford that did similar to this. The tire shop said I had a balljoint that was bad & they wantef $700 to fix it. I told 'em just to balance the tires & we'll see what it does. Worked for mine. No guarantees on yours, but I hope this helps.
I had a nasty shudder/rumble when braking from higher speeds 60/70km+ and thought it was bad rotors. It wasn't long before the brakes started feeling a little bit weak and I was getting an odd squeaking sound from the booster when depressing the pedal.
I don't know if it was the booster or the master cylinder causing the problem but after replacing both parts at the same time the shudder/rumble was gone.
If I had to guess I would say it was the booster causing the shudder since I was getting that squeak from it. Maybe the diaphragm or other part in the booster was fluttering somehow and caused the master cylinder to pulse. Either way replacing both parts took care of the shuddering brakes for me.
I hope you get it figured out. I know how irritating a brake shudder can be.
Same thing here but I only have the rear wheel drive and not 4x4. This only started after I had the tires rotated and balanced. But when coming to a complete stop it has this loud grinding grumbling sound. When I start to drive and foot is off the brake i can hear a swish...swish..swish sound as the wheel rotates. so I'm sure there is something rubbing the wheel as it spins. My father suggested to check for a stuck caliper. I just replaced the front brakes this week and the mechanic said my rotors were fine. I also replaced the front wheel bearings and its still making the noise. I'm thinking a caliper problem. What's involved in repairing a caliper? Is it a DIY job or need special tools etc.?
