My son and I are have decided to replace the injectors on our 300 six. Previously while driving if you backed off the throttle just a bit, the truck would pick up, as if there was not enough fuel compared to air. Coupled with over 130K miles on the original injectors, it’s time. Replacements are pricey and we will likely go with the Accell 15 lb models. The original ones appear to be 14 lb models. I’ve read about putting on an adjustable fuel pressure regulator from a mustang with just a few modifications to reduce the pressure down to 45 lbs. Has anyone used these injectors? Also, has anyone seen any improvement in engine performance going to a larger injector? Thoughts and ideas please. Thanks,
Sorry.. you cannot just install larger injectors and expect the motor to work right, the computer is calibrated for a particular size injector and anything else will cause problems. The issue you describe has nothing to do with the injectors either, what you feel is the computer adding ignition advance as engine load decreases when you back off the throttle. This is normal but it wouldn't hurt to check that the distributor advance is set correctly, it should be 10deg BTDC with the spout plug removed. Also pull the codes to see if the computer has flagged any problems, it pulls more advance than normal out under load if something is not right.
Agreed- if the injectors you have now are working fine there's no need to replace them. If you're not sure, take a long screwdriver or even a piece of wooden dowel works and place the tip against the injector, the other against your ear. You should hear a steady clicking with each one- if not, then that particular injector may be bad or just receiving improper signals. You'd be wasting a lot of time and money replacing them unnecessarily.
