My son and I are finally working over my beloved 91 F-150 4x4 with a small utility bed. After checking out the 300 six and confirming its condition, we resealed pan, side and valve cover and front cover. Now we have decided to upgrade the rear axle which is currently code 19 (3.55). We have found a complete H9 in good shape. One difference I do see is that our 19 has a flat flange yoke while the H9 has a conventional yoke. Will I need to simply swap yokes or is there an actual difference in drive shafts? Also, we will be installing the front and rear OEM sway bars. It appears that aside from the rear spring widths calling for different links, we are good to go. The front one mount seems to be determined by whether or not the front frame cross member is curved or not. Has anyone more information on this? All greatly appreciated.
I'm subscribing to this thread, I like topics like these. What are the plans for your F-150? What gear ratio are you changing it to? 3.55 is about perfect for the 300. If you insist on going lower, I strongly recomend not going lower than 3.73 - unless this truck isn't going to see much highway use.
I apologize for not giving you more useful information. My own suspension should be upgraded but I never touch it. Also, I love the way those older F-150's look (the '91's and olders). Do you have any pictures of the old girl? I'd like to see.
Thanks - no digital pics of her yet. In keeping with the same gearing which worked well in the past, I'll stick with the 3.55's. Just think it woulld be helpful to have the posi rear.

What is your intended use for the truck? Off roader? Street? Hot rod?
The H9 is the axle code for a factory 3.55 limited slip diff BTW did you make sure the clutch packs are good? I know they can wear out after alot of miles
I have a 1994 F-150 XL, LWB with a 300I6 and E4OD....Was wanting to install a front an rear sway bar setup, along with a 3.55 rear end ratio (Mine has a 3.08 Open) with Track-Lock setup. The truck is a daily driver/General use truck, I want more handling, as I live in the hills, and I want more torque....Thanks all
How fast do you go on the highway, and what size tires do you normally run, Mr. Wes?
If you have a LOT of hills, 3.73 wouldn't be bad. I hardly ever have to come out of OD n the hills around here unless I'm driving at low speeds, in which case I'll just kick her out of OD.

You should be able to just change the yokes, though you may be able to remove the flat flange from your driveshaft and connect the U joint directly to the old yoke.

Laurel Mountain Mustang has diff clutch kits for CHEAP - M-4700-B - $47.95 Laurel Mountain Mustang
6CylBill- I WAS running P235/75/15 Cooper Tires (What the truck came with) And now I dropped it to P225/75/15 Uniroyal Tiger Paw Rally Edition Tires Speed rated for 100mph.....The reasoning was less torque required to turn the tires ver, hence better mpg, better handling since the truck is a bit lower, and last but not least, I had to have all 4 tires at one time and the shop I went to would hav had to order the tires I wanted, and the Uniroyals were only $380 mounted, balanced, and installed, Alignment was $40 for laser alignment....
As for my speed, Ummm....haha....Usually I am in a hurry so, I will safely say from 30-80mph.....Seriously...>and like I said before, I use the truck to haul what I need......So whatever I do has to be truly 100% functional...>Load rating, speed rating, and handling abilities....
I don't know Wes. I don't fully understand sway bars or their cost. All I know is my truck has one on the front (I didn't even know they made them for the rear?)
front sway bars u can buy them in kits with everything u need and i think the front is like around $200 each *not exact price some higher some lower* they help alot with cornering stability and so if u like to drive at high rates of speed like me they are way worth the money
Hence, My asking for front and REAR sway bars....lol
My crown vic had the police package stuff....Night and day from my truck...BTW, is there a possibility of using the rear sway bar off the 'vic, onto my truck?
Truck=1994 2wd long bed
Car=1991 Crown Victoria
....Jus a thought, might save me like $200-300...
