I have a 2004 f350 super duty with electronic four wheel drive and I'm having a problem with the 4wd staying on. From 2wd to 4wd it will go in and will say it is in on the dash with "4x4" on it. You can tell its in and grabs well, and then after driving a little while with the 4wd on, it seems to come out of 4wd and you can definately tell, if you stop and then go it is definately not in. But yet, the 4x4 light is still on and it tells me that it is working. To put it back in, I have to take it out of 4wd to 2wd and then put it back into 4x4 and it will work but it will repeat and come out again.
Also, my low range doesnt work and it does not show up on the dash cluster at all. I want to find out if its my transfer case or something else, maybe a sensor or something, im not sure.
Good old ESOF,,,You have "Auto" and "Lock" on your front Hubs, try turning your Hubs to the "Lock" posistion,,,and see if it stays in 4x4 when you want it too!
If 4x4 works OK then,,you may have a vacum leak to the front hubs!
To go into 4x4 Low,,you need to stop,,put in neutral,,your foot on the brake,,then switch to 4x4 Low,,,may help if the truck rolls slightly!! Read the manual!!
Sounds like you just got the truck.
Check out tsb 04-18-5 in the Recalls/TSBs tab. I had the same problem in my '04 F250. The right hub would disengage. After drilling the axle per the TSB instead of replacing the hub I took it apart cleaned/lubed it and reinstalled. ESOF has worked perfectly ever since. If the hub initally engages at all you DON't have a vacuum problem. The latch mechanism inside the hub is not latching, which could be caused by the condition described in the TSB. On my truck the P/O rarely used 4wd and so was not aware that it wasn't working properly.
On the low range problem make sure the trans is in neutral with your foot on the brake. Should work then.
ESOF may not be perfect, but it's a decent system if you understand how it works and troubleshoot it properly when it doesn't.
