What carb?

I am wanting to put a Offenhauser dual plane aluminum 4 barrell intake and efi manifolds on my 86 300 4.9l. I am wanting to get some opinions on what carburetor to put on this setup? I want to get one that isn't going to be a pain to tune and not going to cost a ton of money. Any help will be appreciated!

The Offy DP (dual port) is a different configuration than a "dual plane" manifold. The DP requires the use of a 4v carb whereas the Offy C or Clifford manifolds can be used with 2v or 4v carbs. Usually 4v carbs from the Holley 390 to an Edelbrock 500 are used although some use QuadraJets too. All carbs require tuning...some more than others. Unless you receive one as a gift or steal them, all require money to obtain. Do your shopping.

If you are looking to do it on the cheap, be willing to make up the cost difference with labor--rebuilding, rejetting, dialing in, etc. Even with a new carb, however, it might take some time to dial it in. Then you will also have the issue of throttle linkage.

You might want to find an Autolite 4100, 1.08 venturi size, but that is IF you go with a 'C' type manifold so the carb does not sit 90 degrees to the engine. You will also need the 1/8" base plate sold by Pony Carbs for $20 to avoid vacuum leaks. You can pick one up on Craig's List for cheap, or at a swap meet, and rebuild kits only run about $12--$20 bucks. Or look at some of the different Holly Carbs.

I'm running an Edelbrock 1403 (500 CFM electric choke) on my Offy Dual-Port and it was a royal pain to set up because the carburetor sits sideways, and my AC box prevented me from pulling the throttle linkage from behind as would normally be done. I had to get creative; check out my photo album in my profile if you're interested.

Regarding what FMC said: I am running the same Carb, but had zero issue with the linkage, thanks to a Lokar cable.

Plan ahead. If there is any problem with the throttle pulling from the passenger fender, then go with a 'C' type intake.

What I find interesting about the previous post, is that he didn't mention he had to spend a lot of time changing jets, float level, metering rods, etc. to get the carb running smooth.

The Edelbrock is probably the easiest to set up. And fmc400 did an excellent job on on his linkage. Check it out.

Thanks for the props Harte3.

And F-250 restorer is correct - the carb ran out of the box. I ran it that way for quite a while. After that I put a vacuum gauge on it to dial in the idle mixture setting, and reduced the accelerator pump stroke by one notch. Now I've got the rod and jet kit from Edelbrock to see if I can squeeze out an MPG or two and I've changed the rods. It's really easy to work on.

I looked at your linkage photos and was very impressed. Is that the stock cable? I like how you made the little bracket on the firewall pedal bracket. That took a bit of doing!! Very nice.
