tranny leaking

Well we were out mudding yesterday and my buddies got a 2000 f350 with a 12inch lift and 41 inch iroks, we were pulling another truck out that was stuck and my buddy was pulling in reverse and we noticed it leaking something so we stopped and looked and its leaking tranny fluid out of the inspection cover hole. Its leaking pretty good. We told him to head home real quick cause he lives only 2-3 miles away. Everything ran fine and shifted fine but was just leaking fluid pretty good. I told him i would come on here and post something before we tear into it cause you guys are great at it. Any help would be appreciated.

Pulling in reverse will get the trans hot in a hurry.... The front seal can and does flip causing aleak, it might return to normal after it cools down but, eventually it will fail though. There is a new seal (viton IIRC) that's supposed to cure it.

I've heard of this happening alot on here over the last two years I've been here, puking trans fluid when working it hard in reverse so it happens. I think Jim above got you on the right path..

well we let it cool down or two days and added some fluid and started it and let it run for awhile, no leak for a few hours and then it started very slowly, so i guess i will be pulling the trans back and replacing that seal. Thanks guys!

Note for the future, when you have the capability, use 4lo in reverse to back things that have any amount of weight up. Its slow, but its that much safer, and easier on the trans. And if you dont have ESOF, you can just leave your hubs unlocked, and have 2wd 4lo. Thats what I have done, and continue to do.
