i had my 8ba (was in a '49 f-1) rebuilt in '77, was a daily driver until '84 when it made an ominous sounding noise for 10 seconds. drove it a few more weeks and took it off the road. pulled it out in 06, it would still "run". one side had low compression in 3cyl. one stuck valve, two burned valves and a chuck of a piston missing. had the engine torn down for eval and to save the merc crank. here's the bad piston. engine restorer was a smart a** remark. fortunately we found a junkyard eab, 110 lbs on 7, 90 lbs on one, 44 lbs oil p cold, drops to about 18 when fully warms up (with a little hike in idle) for $500. thought you might enjoy this pic on the holiday weekend. dick r
Brush off the crumbly stuff and break out the JB Weld Putty - make sure you kneed it up well - just a hint, take some plasti wrap and wrap around the top of the piston and roll it on the table while the putty sets up - won't take nearly as much filing to get it back to round.
looks to me like it worked fine for a lot of miles with a broken top ring to wear the land that much- epoxy is a great repair agent- heheh just kidding.
